My journey with KFSR began with a chance encounter.  I was assigned to write a story about the station.  It was during this process that I learned about possible internship opportunities.  The funny thing was I wasn’t looking for an internship at the time, but the opportunity seemed too good to pass up.  I had already signed up for my classes for the next semester and was concerned about adding more to my plate, but I went against my better judgement and signed up for the internship anyway because I knew opportunity doesn’t always knock twice.  Taking that risk was the best decision I ever made.

I started my internship with KFSR during the middle of my junior year.  I was originally involved with updating the digital music catalog but as time progressed my responsibilities grew. I was able to hone my on-air abilities as a host of the Evening Eclectic programming.  I was involved in music research and what was the earliest development of FSR Underground. I am grateful for the variety of opportunities I had within the programming, marketing/promotions, and event planning operations.  And I was provided with knowledgeable and vital coaching as I developed my on-air skills.

I was fortunate to attend a variety of events on behalf of the station that allowed me the ability to network and meet influential people both on and off campus.  KFSR taught me the importance of networking and how to build and maintain professional relationships.  Networking is so important in the entertainment industry and I don’t think I would have been as confident in my abilities to work a room without having the opportunities I had at KFSR.

I enjoyed my time at Fresno State and enjoyed my classes, however my time at KFSR ignited my passion for learning.  KFSR gave me an opportunity to expand and reinforce what I was learning in my classes.  The MCJ Department gave me the knowledge needed to get hired but KFSR gave me the skills to then hit the ground running. I was not just able to get hired out of college but I was able to fast track my radio career.  I would have not have been able to do that had it not been for KFSR.

I owe my success to KFSR’S General Manager Julie Logan. She has the ability to see raw talent and create working professionals.  Julie is an invaluable resource for students.  She makes sure that upon graduation you would be able to handle the “real world” career scenarios.  Her willingness to share her vast knowledge of the industry has helped me avoid mistakes that many rookies often make early on in their career.  There are many times I have called her and had to thank her for preparing me for very specific situations.  The lesson might not have seemed relevant at the time but, surprise that lesson was the most important. 

It brings a smile to my face every time someone asks me how I got into radio because that means I get to share my fond memories of my time at KFSR.
