There are so many ways to be involved with KFSR, and it all helps build valuable skills to use in your career and life...

I came to Fresno State as a transfer student in the fall of 2016.  I was worried and scared that I only had two years to cram in as much experience and knowledge as possible.  I felt that I was two years behind everyone, even though I just completed two years of community college.  I felt different and alone, and struggled with finding my passion and direction to a clear career path.

I first became involved with KFSR by crossing paths on campus with the station’s General Manager.  I learned more about the opportunities at the station and decided to enroll in an Independent Study class, assigned to involvement with the station.  Little did I know that the time I would spend at KFSR would change my life and provide a stepping stool to the career I have today.

During my time at KFSR, I served in the Programming Department and Development Department as an on-air co-host during the station’s pledge drives.  I loved the experience and it helped me become a much better public speaker.  I also served in the Marketing and Public Relations Department and helped produce the “KFSR Jazz & Wine Festival” fundraising concert.  It was a huge event that was very professional and I learned so much about event management from the experience.  I served in the Music Department doing music research that gave me an in-depth knowledge of radio music programming.  There are so many ways to be involved, and it all helps build valuable skills to use in your career and life!

Beyond the specific assignments I had at KFSR, there was just a general atmosphere of support.  The station staff were always helpful and encouraging.  They try to support students in finding their true path.  I knew I had a passion for helping people, and only had a vague idea about accomplishing that by being an on-air personality.  After some great discussions and advocacy, I learned about the career opportunities in the nonprofit sector.  I truly believe that my independent study class with KFSR is what taught me most of the non-profit knowledge I use today in my career.

The two years I spent at Fresno State, and specifically with KFSR, made me into the professional I am today.  After graduation, I spent some time employed in Fresno.  In 2022, I moved to Los Angeles to grow my professional network and serve on multiple nonprofit boards and committees.  I am currently the Development Manager of Events & Communications for the Ronald McDonald House in Pasadena, and am in the process of obtaining my CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) certification and my master’s degree in Nonprofit Management.  If not for KFSR, and Julie Logan’s guidance and support, I would not be where I am today.

To all my fellow transfer students at Fresno State:  Your path is as valid as any student’s path.  Take advantage of every minute you have at Fresno State.  Open yourself to possibilities and get involved.  If you choose to include KFSR in your education, you won’t regret it!
